In the very Caribbean New York City neighborhood where I grew up, three colors made up the summer manicures of the early 2000s: white, cotton candy pink, and neon yellow. All the cool girls, moms, and aunties requested these hues, but I had an affinity for the last one. Highlighter yellow—in all its fluorescent glory—was my go-to vacation nail color. It complemented my skin tone and looked even better as I spent more time at the beach.

Jin Soon Choi, manicurist and founder of JINSoon, also recalls the neon explosion of the late ’90s and early aughts. "Neon yellow was everywhere and it felt bold, playful, and a little punk," she says. "I remember creating looks with glow-in-the-dark accents, airbrushed neon art, and graphic decals like stars and hearts."

Ami Vega, a nail artist in Washington Heights in Manhattan, recalls a similar experience to mine, where she had seen people in her predominantly Latin community veer toward neons, especially during the summer months. "I’d see my tia and mom with neon reds and purples, especially on their toes," Vega recalls. "I remember finally being allowed to go into the beauty supply store, and I was drawn to the neon pink and yellow Bruccia nail polishes."

Neon nails are nostalgic, and perhaps that’s why the internet is obsessed with them right now. But today’s take on these vibrant hues is more luxurious than Day-Glo. “They’re more refined and deliberate," Choi says. "On the runway, I've used neon tones in subtle, graphic ways, like a single stripe, dot, or abstract detail over a sheer base."

In Choi's salon, French tips and jelly finishes in highlighter hues are in high demand, having seen a surge in requests as we move deeper into the warmer months. "Has there ever been a time when neon and summer didn't go together?" asks Miss Pop, a New York City-based manicurist. However, I now see neon nails as more than just a summer manicure. They take me back to salon days with my mom. They’re so serotonin-boosting, I’d wear them all year long.

    Meet the experts:

How to choose the perfect neon for your skin tone

You can wear whatever color or combination of polishes your heart desires. If you want to be intentional about how your mani looks against your skin, our pros have a few tips. Shop their product suggestions here.

    • For cool skin tones, Choi suggests electric pinks, mint greens, or icy blues. "These shades pop beautifully without overpowering the skin," she says.
    • For medium or olive tones, Choi recommends considering warmer colors, such as corals, bright oranges, or highlighter yellows.
    • On deep skin tones, Choi encourages lime greens, vivid fuchsias, or purples. "These shades don't just pop on deep skin, they glow and bring out the richness of the complexion in a striking way," she says.

As you peruse your salon’s polish wall, Miss Pop says that holding the bottle against your palm is helpful, as that area is closest to your fingertips. "It gives you a better idea of how the color will look on your nail," she says.

Warning: Neon polish can stain your nails and skin

While neon polish can be extra fun, there’s one thing to keep in mind: staining. "Because the pigments in neon colors are so rich, they can stain your nails or the skin around your fingers," Miss Pop says. She has a few pointers to prevent this: "First, make sure you're applying a base coat to protect your polish and your natural nail." She says think of a base coat like your primer before foundation. Yes, you can put your makeup on without it, but primer will help smooth fine lines and keep your makeup looking its best. The same goes for a base coat.

Being precise during polish removal is also essential to avoid stains. "Instead of roughly swiping your nails with cotton and remover, press the soaked cotton onto your nails for 10 seconds and then gently pull it toward the tip of your nails," Vega says. "Repeat that until all of your polish is removed. And, if some neon pigment still makes its way to the crevices of your fingertips, Vega says you can use an orange stick dipped in acetone to clean up the edges.

I’m Hypnotized By Kylie Jenner’s Twisted French Manicure—See the Photos

Kylie Jenner attends an event wearing a black textured dress. She wears her hair up.Getty ImagesSave StorySave this storySave StorySave this story

What's black and white and striped…on the tips? Kylie Jenner's latest manicure, of course! The Kylie Cosmetics founder has been keeping us on our toes with her nail art lately, and every set is more delightful than the last. Case in point: the hypnotizing black-and-white striped Twisted French manicure currently gracing her fingertips.

The stripey set is the work of celebrity manicurist Zola Ganzorigt, who frequently works with Jenner (and her good pal Hailey Bieber). Instead of sticking to a simple pink-and-white French or swapping the white tip for a pastel shade like her sister Kourtney recently did, Jenner went bold and graphic with alternating black-and-white curved lines on medium-length, almond-shaped nails. Ganzorigt dubbed the design a Twisted French, and we have a feeling it's going to catch on fast.

Kylie Jenner shows off her latest manicure a blackandwhite striped French set.instagram.com/kyliejenner

If you have a steady hand, it wouldn't be too difficult to DIY this design; all you have to do is add a few slim black stripes to a classic French, though you could get creative and do a colored tip and lines too. Jenner's black-and-white palette looked great with her black-and-white gingham dress, and it's neutral enough to match a variety of outfits. You really can't go wrong with a French manicure, especially when you jazz it up with a simple bit of black polish.

This isn't the first time she's put a spin on the timeless aesthetic. Jenner has been giving her manicures a fun French twist a lot lately. While vacationing in Europe, she added shiny chrome polka dots to her mani, and earlier this year, she went short and sweet with studded pastel French tips. It's a fun way to incorporate nail art and still feels attainable for those of us who aren't exactly pro-level nail artists—a little whimsical, a little cheeky, but still totally Fashion with a capital F.

In the 2010 cult-classic film Burlesque, Christina Aguilera plays Ali Rose, a talented singer who leaves her Midwestern hometown to become a star in Los Angeles and ends up working at a flashy burlesque club—ditching her long hair and minimal makeup for high-octane glamour befitting the opulent location. If there's one thing we know about Aguilera, it's that she's never afraid to take a beauty risk, on- or off-screen—including bringing a little gothy goodness to the middle of a London summer.

Though Burlesque was mostly panned when it came out, the movie has taken on new life due to streaming and recently turned into a stage musical. For the premiere of said musical, executive producer Aguilera started spooky season early with dramatic almost-black lipstick and her signature icy, near-white platinum blonde hair.

In the movie, Ali frequently wears a bright, Marilyn Monroe-inspired red lip while performing for the club guests, but Aguilera ditched the Old Hollywood glamour of her onscreen alter ego in favor of a rich, deep lip color for the London premiere, crafted by makeup artist Hector Espinal. At first glance, her lipstick looks pure black, but upon closer examination, you'll notice the subtlest hint of a blood-red tone in the mix, giving it depth and dimension. The moody color was a striking juxtaposition against Aguilera's long, light-blonde hair, which she wore long and loose, and added a dramatic contrast to her otherwise-summery look of fresh, gleaming skin, defined brows, and a swoop of black eyeliner, plus a delicate, sheer white manicure.

Christina Aguilera poses in a green corset dress. She wears dark almostblack lipstick and has long platinumblonde hair.Getty Images

If Aguilera's chartreuse corset dress looks familiar, that's because she's worn it before—all the way back in 2003, while posing for a Versace campaign! At that time, she was pretty much bare-faced in the ad, but if they were to update it for today, the dark lipstick and brows would be a fun way to give it a 2025 spin. Goth, meet glamour!

We’re not saying hypochlorous acid sprays can do everything…but these multitasking skin-care products do tackle an impressive array of issues. The active ingredient, hypochlorous acid, forms when chlorine reacts with water and has potent antimicrobial properties—making it an effective salve for skin conditions ranging from rosacea to sunburns and more. Rachel Day, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Coral Gables, Florida, explains it like this: “Hypochlorous acid is a naturally occurring molecule your immune system produces to help fight off infection and support healing. In dermatology, we use hypochlorous acid spray as a gentle topical formulation to reduce inflammation, calm irritated skin, and keep bacteria in check—without disrupting the skin barrier.”

    Our Top Hypochlorous Acid Sprays

    • Best Overall: Prequel Hypochlorous Acid Spray, $17

    • Best Post-Procedure: Magic Molecule Daily Antimicrobial Skin Spray, $20
    • Best for Families: Briotech Topical Skin Spray, $17

Furthermore, Dr. Day says that the bacteria-fighting ingredient is particularly helpful for conditions like eczema or acne; it’s also a boon for skin irritation. “I often recommend hypochlorous-based products to my patients with eczema as part of a personalized, barrier-friendly skin-care plan,” she says. “It’s also great for younger patients who sweat a lot and play sports.” Sold yet? Because we have been. If you want in, too, we’ve rounded up the best fine mists with heavy-hitting benefits and little to no side effects.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does hypochlorous acid spray actually work?

Hypochlorous acid spray does work, as top dermatologists can attest. Azadeh Shirazi, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in La Jolla, California, says: “Hypochlorous acid spray can be very effective when formulated properly. It mimics a substance our own white blood cells produce to fight infection and inflammation. It’s effective yet gentle, helping support the skin’s natural healing process. I often recommend it for sensitive, eczema-prone, or acne-prone skin because it reduces redness and irritation without disrupting the skin barrier.”

Kristina Collins, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Austin, offers her take. “Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) spray can be highly effective when used correctly,” she says. “As a naturally occurring molecule in the immune system, HOCl has broad-spectrum antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps reduce bacteria on the skin, calm redness, and support the healing of conditions like acne, eczema, and minor irritations.”

How often should I use hypochlorous acid spray?

According to Dr. Shirazi, hypochlorous acid sprays can be used one to two times a day, depending on the skin’s needs. “For most people, applying it after cleansing, morning and/or night, is a great way to incorporate it into your skincare routine,” she says.

What should I not mix with hypochlorous acid?

“Even though hypochlorous acid is quite gentle, it’s best to avoid using it at the same time as strong actives like retinol or exfoliating acids, like salicylic acid, unless your dermatologist says otherwise,” Dr. Shirazi notes. Dr. Collins says that the ingredient does not generally mix well with vitamin C or glycolic acid, as mixing hypochlorous acid with other acidic ingredients could cause its pH level to shift and reduce its effectiveness.

To get the most out of hypochlorous acid spray, Dr. Shirazi recommends applying it to clean skin first, before toner, moisturizer, sunscreen, or other products. “This helps it do its job without being diluted or neutralized by other products,” she explains.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that's included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best hypochlorous acid sprays, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from makeup artists, dermatologists, and cosmetic chemists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

I can hardly wrap my mind around the fact that it's been 15 years since Jessica Simpson has performed new music. One of the most prominent pop voices of the Y2K era, she has worn many hats—a mom, a fashion entrepreneur, and more—but music seemed to take a backseat for a bit. But fans of her powerhouse vocals are thrilled to see that she's not only back with a new album, Nashville Canyon, Pt. 2, she's also ready to take it to the stage and screen. And that's exactly what she did on Wednesday morning with flair down to her fingertips.

Simpson performed on Today for the first time in nearly two decades for the show's outdoor concert series, bringing the live and TV audiences new music, as well as some of the hits for which she became so well-known. Her look could best be described as Western bohemian glam, with an iridescent, fringy jacket over a pale pink, corsetted dress and topped off with a large cross necklace. She also wore oversized rings, including a massive turquoise piece—but that's not the only place on her fingers where stones showed up.

There's leopard print with a bejeweled zodiac symbol for Cancer, silver mixed with pearls, a metallic French tip, and more turquoise—and that's just some of what's on her left hand. The eclectic gem party continued on the right hand, which included the word “Fade”—the name of her new single—written in three-dimensional red polish on her middle finger.

    Kara McGrath

Why we love it: Using a kajal liner is an eye-opening experience. If you want a pencil with an ultra-smooth—dare we say, satiny—glide, this is the type of pigment to use. Kajal also has maximalist color payoff, is resistant to smudging, and tends to be gentle on sensitive eyes. Whipped up with soothing, hydrating ingredients like chamomile extract and panthenol, Victoria Beckham’s Satin Kajal eyeliner comes in 21 shades ranging from Night Flash (black with a hint of silver shimmer) to Gold Lamé and Seafoam. Not only does the color palette allow for versatility, but the creamy kajal formula works just as well for architectural lines as it does for a sexy, smudgy look. (Bonus: The pencil comes with a built-in smudger on the other end. Just work quickly before the long-wearing liner sets.)

The pencil is a makeup artist’s fave, too, says Spickard. “I was at dinner last night with [makeup artist] Nam Vo, and we were both singing the praises of the VBB liners,” he says. “They're so creamy and so pigmented. There are very few eyeliners of that caliber on the market today. Also, the shades are absolutely gorgeous.”

“I'm convinced this is the creamiest eyeliner on the planet. The shade Cinnamon—a rich, warm brown with just a hint of shimmer—also creates the quickest, easiest I-put-some-effort-into-my-makeup-today look: Just throw some in your waterline then blend it out using the built-in smudger. It'll last all day (or night), I promise.” —Kara McGrath, content director

Why we love it: Available in five shades with irresistible French names—Poupette, Bisou, et cetera—Bitten Lip Tint hydrates the lips while dousing them in a flush of color. Made with mustard sprout extract to plump, squalane to hydrate, and sodium hyaluronate to fill in fine lines, the cushiony tint is transfer-resistant. Pro tip: Pat a few dots of the multitasking product onto your cheeks to make them just as kissable as your lips. Why we love it: Another Best of Beauty winner, the Contour Stylus Precision Contour Stick makes it a cinch to get snatched. With a slim tip built for targeted application, the sculpting tool is practically foolproof, even if you don’t consider yourself an artiste. Swipe it along the nose, jawline, cheekbones, and just above the lips, and use your fingers to blend it in (it’s so creamy and smooth, you won’t even need a brush.) Like all the best Victoria Beckham Beauty products, this one is made with plant-based ingredients including hydrating squalane, smoothing blue lotus wax, and linefill, which boosts facial volume. “I love the finer tip on this contour product compared to others you see on the market,” Spickard says. “You get precision placement, which I usually achieve with a smaller brush, in the actual packaging itself. You can also use it on the eyes and get a natural eye contour or eye shadow look with minimal effort.”

Why we love it: When it comes time to swipe off all that gorgeous Victoria Beckham makeup, give your skin the TLC it deserves with the brand’s Daily Cleansing Protocol. London-based aesthetician Melanie Grant helped develop the ultra-luxe double cleanse, which pairs a silky oil cleanser with a lactic acid gel cleanser. The two-step system leaves skin soft and cleaned, while the lactic acid acts as the fairy godmother of glow as it gently exfoliates dull skin.

Tester feedback from executive beauty director Jenny Bailey

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

"I actually didn’t realize I needed a cleansing ‘protocol’ before I started using Victoria Beckham’s Daily Cleansing Protocol Duo. My face has never felt more pure, or silkier. A couple of pumps of the oil remove every speck of makeup (including mascara) before the lactic acid gel gently exfoliates. By the time I pat dry, I almost feel like I can skip the rest of my skin-care routine (but I swear I don’t!) My only note for the suggestion box involves the packaging: No one over 45 (presumably the dominant age group dropping $120 on their double-cleansing needs?) can read the tiny print on these two almost-identical bottles, so I’ve definitely mixed up the steps a couple of times." —Jenny Bailey, executive beauty director

It's also infused with antioxidant-packed ingredients that nourish the hair and skin, including camellia japonica oil for hydration and rosehip seed oil for moisture.
    • With a buttery glide that’s a hallmark of Victoria Beckham Beauty, Lip Definer comes in seven shades designed to complement fair, medium, and deep lip tones. The formula doesn’t just go on smoothly; it also smooths the lips themselves. Infused with peptides, the contouring lip liner blurs fine lines and wrinkles, and it’s something of an under-the-radar gem. “These are beyond underrated!” Spickard says. “I have the full shade range of these liners in my kit and use them on all my clients. They’re pigmented but super blendable, just like the eyeliners, and help give you the perfect pout.”
    • When a world-renowned regenerative-medicine expert helps develop a concealer, it’s safe to assume the product will cover dark circles and then some. Indeed, Victoria Beckham by Augustinus Bader The Concealer Pen with TFC8 goes beyond spot correction to improve the appearance of puffiness, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines around the eyes.

For our list of the best Victoria Beckham Beauty products, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors, along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more about our reporting and testing process, read our complete review process and methodology page.

Face primer is essential for keeping your makeup from melting off by midday, especially in the summer. But when it comes to the best primers for oily skin, the search gets trickier. You need a formula that not only locks everything in place but also mattifies, minimizes pores, and won’t clog or irritate acne-prone skin. Also important in your search: oil-fighting ingredients. (Try cellulose and niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3 that helps balance skin tone and control excess oil.)

To find the best primers for oily skin, Allure editors tapped makeup artists for their go-tos and tested over 15 formulas that claim to mattify, smooth, and control oil. During testing, we looked at how long they kept makeup on, how well they blurred pores, and whether they truly helped curb shine. Ahead, the expert-backed, editor-approved primers that actually hold up all day.

Allure contributing commerce editor Deanna Pai applying the Nars Soft Matte Primer

    Deanna Pai

Why it’s worth it: Of all the formulas we tried, the Nars Soft Matte Primer came out on top because it combines everything we’re looking for in a primer for oily skin. First off, the gel-like texture is super lightweight, something we can't say for all the mattifying primers we tested. It glides on easily, instantly knocks out shine, and smooths over pores, uneven texture, and fine lines without feeling like a film on your skin. And it doesn’t make your face look flat or chalky—as with the brand’s setting powder, it gets rid of excess oil but still leaves skin with a natural finish that reflects just the right amount of light.

During testing, we were especially impressed by how well it held up throughout the day. Like a setting spray, it kept our makeup in place from morning to night—even through sweat and oil buildup—and gave us a clean, smooth base for foundation. Plus, it somehow manages to keep skin feeling hydrated and plump (rare for a mattifying formula!).

“My skin is naturally oily, not to mention acne-prone—so I sit in the space of needing a good mattifying primer, but being worried it'll feel heavy or occlusive. That's never been the case with this one, which can somehow make my skin look more matte throughout the day. I recently wore it when the temperature reached the upper 90s and, on top of it, I had to wear a mask due to a cough. This primer held up like no one's business: It kept shine from forming on my forehead and nose, and my full-coverage foundation didn't budge until I washed it off.” —Deanna Pai, contributing commerce editor

    Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder

Why it’s worth it: If you're looking for a skin-blurring primer and tinted balm in one, the 2023 Allure Best of Beauty Award–winning Danessa Myricks Blurring Balm is basically an IRL smoothing filter. You can wear it on its own or under foundation (it even comes in a clear version, pictured above, if you prefer no tint), and it always feels lightweight and breathable, which is a big win for oily skin. The balm-to-powder formula means it won’t sit on your face and leave a greasy residue. Instead, it melts in and actively mattifies, thanks to ingredients like silicone for blurring, vegan squalane to balance oil, and upsalite to absorb excess sweat throughout the day. There’s also a dose of hyaluronic acid for hydration, because oily skin still needs moisture to keep the barrier healthy.

Why it’s worth it: It’s rare to find a pore-blurring primer that’s also silicone-free, but Huda Beauty’s Easy Blur Primer is the diamond in the rough. Since some silicones can potentially clog pores and trigger breakouts, this one is a great pick for anyone with acne-prone skin as it smooths and blurs without the risk of congestion.

It also absorbs oil all day, thanks to milk thistle extract and glycerin, and gives skin a smooth, airbrushed finish under makeup. Where it really shines is in how well it fills in pores—hi, skin-smoothing polymers—even if you skip foundation entirely. Pro tip: On no-makeup days, try applying it under your moisturizer. It gives your skin a soft-focus finish that has people thinking you’re wearing a base even though you’re not.

I still get a bit of glow, but it controls end-of-day shine and gives my skin a porcelain-like finish, with or without makeup. One/Size

Oil Sucker Extreme Mattifying Alkaline Primer

    $34

    Sephora

Why it’s worth it: The most powerful of all the primers on this list, the One/Size Oil Sucker Extreme Mattifying Primer is beloved by makeup artists Christian Briceno and Dani Parkes, the latter of whom says it’s one of the only primers she’s found actually keeps the skin matte all through the day. “This primer truly grips makeup while controlling oils,” Parke notes.

Another welcome plus? It also blurs the pores so effectively that it creates a smooth base to apply your foundation or concealer, Briceno says. But don’t get it twisted—it’s not going to sap your skin of all moisture. This formula is also loaded with hyaluronic acid, which visibly plumps and boosts moisture without the shine. One thing to note? “Avoid using oil-based products on top of it, as they tend to separate from the skin and look flaky,” says Briceno.

Expert tip from makeup artist Dani Parkes

If you want another layer of oil-blocking protection, Parkes loves to spray the One/Size On ‘Til Dawn Setting Spray, which claims to be waterproof, transferproof, smudgeproof, and sweatproof for 16 hours, to lock in her client’s makeup looks.

That’s exactly what you get with Milk Makeup’s Pore Eclipse Primer. (Its sister product, the Pore Eclipse Matte Setting Spray, won a 2024 Allure Best of Beauty Award.) This lightweight, water-cream primer blurs pores and controls shine on contact, but it also packs some of the most skin care-forward ingredients of any primer on this list. Why we love it: If you’re after long-lasting oil control, Benefit’s The Porefessional Matte Pore Minimizing Primer is an Allure favorite. The original Porefessional Pore Primer is a classic (we were using it back in our high school days), but this newer version takes that pore-blurring power and cranks up the mattifying effect. The texture is different, too: It’s silky and a bit milky, rather than having a silicone-y slip, which makes it easy to smooth over your whole face without pilling. It leaves behind a velvety, soft-focus finish that keeps shine in check all day. Bonus: The formula is packed with skin-loving ingredients like niacinamide (spotting a theme?), oil-absorbing rosehip extract, and mineral powders to help blur large pores over time. So, the more you use it, the better your skin will look.

Why we love it: Similar to the Milk primer, E.L.F's Power Grip Matte Primer—a matte version of the fan-fave Power Grip Primer—has a sticky, tacky texture that holds onto makeup all day long, and Parkes is a mega fan for her oily skin clients. “The texture and feel of this primer helps your makeup last so long, and it’s super mattifying, so it reduces oil buildup throughout the day,” she says. Similar to other oil-busters on this list, its claim to fame is that it has niacinamide, which Parkes says helps clear your pores over time.

    Expert tip from Parkes

“Use this primer if you want your makeup to blend better on your skin—the soft matte finish creates the perfect smooth base for application,” Parkes says.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which primer type is best for oily skin?

According to Briceno, silicone-based primers are the way to go if you have oily skin. “They contain silicate, which helps absorb the oils in the skin, creating a smooth, grippy texture for makeup,” he says. Another bonus of silicate? It provides that velvety-looking finish that improves the appearance or pores and helps control areas of the face with excessive oil production, Briceno says. One caveat: If you have acne-prone skin, be aware that silicones can trap bacteria, so make sure to cleanse your skin thoroughly when removing it.

If you don’t see a silicone callout on the package, you’ll know that a primer is good for oily skin if the bottle has words like “mattifying” and “pore blurring,” says Parkes.

What should you keep in mind when shopping for a primer for oily skin?

“Make sure your primer pairs well with your skin-care products,” says Briceno, who prefers water-based moisturizers since they layer best with silicone primers. “They’re lightweight and absorb more easily into the skin,” he explains. If you’re using a thicker moisturizer, give it a few minutes to fully sink in before applying your primer to avoid pilling. Briceno also advises steering clear of alcohol-based products, which can overdry the skin and trigger even more oil production. Instead, he recommends gel-based formulas, which are more durable and help keep oil in check.

What ingredients should you look for in a primer for oily skin?

When shopping for a primer for oily skin, it’s important to keep ingredients in mind. Briceno recommends looking for niacinamide, which helps regulate oil and refine pores, along with oil-absorbing ingredients like silica and kaolin clay to mattify and smooth skin texture.

Silicones such as dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane are great for blurring imperfections and minimizing the look of pores. For those prone to breakouts or congestion, charcoal and salicylic acid can help keep skin clear while controlling excess oil.

Are primers better for oily skin than dry skin?

Both skin types can benefit from primers, but there are clear differences between primers made for oily skin and options made for drier skin types. “Primers for oily skin control shine and prolong wear usually by providing the skin with a grip barrier, so the makeup stays looking fresh for an extended time,” says Briceno. On the other hand, primers for dry skin focus on hydration and provide skin with luminosity. Parkes says a hydrating moisturizer or face oil will do the job for dry skin, too. Where these two types of primers align is with their purpose: They both make your makeup look its best without the need for multiple touch-ups.

How we test and review products

Before reviewing any makeup, we ask questions about a number of factors: What ingredients are in it? Does the brand offer a wide shade range inclusive of consumers with all skin tones and undertones? Is it safe for readers who have sensitive skin or wear contact lenses? Is it on the affordable side or more of a splurge? Is its packaging consciously designed or needlessly wasteful?

For our review of the best primers for oily skin, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and makeup artists to review the products. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product's performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

When it comes to nail care for mature nails, age is just a number, especially if you’re giving your hands and nails the attention they deserve. Just like our skin loses elasticity over time, nails also go through visible changes like thinning, peeling, increased brittleness, and more pronounced ridges. These shifts are often the result of decreased collagen, slower cell turnover, and reduced moisture retention that naturally come with age.

With a few simple steps and the right products, aging nails can look just as healthy, polished, and strong as ever. Hydrating nail conditioners, strengthening treatments, and protective topcoats can go a long way toward maintaining your best nails.

Why we love it: Whether you’re dealing with dryness, brittleness, or peeling nails, CND Rescue RXx is a keratin-based treatment that helps restore strength and promote strong nails. “It’s ideal for age-related thinning or peeling,” says Julie Kandalec, a New York City-based manicurist, who recommends applying it daily for one to four weeks, depending on how weak your nails are. The lightweight, oil-based formula absorbs quickly and doubles as a nourishing cuticle oil, thanks to a blend of jojoba and sweet almond oils. It also smells surprisingly delightful: “It reminds me of the mini fruity marshmallows we had as kids in the Midwest,” says Kandalec. If you’re recovering from damaged nails, this convenient, clear formula applies like a top coat, making it effortless to integrate into your daily routine.

Why we love it: Zoya’s Nail Polish Lavender Perfector is perfect for tackling those pesky yellow tones or uneven nails—whether it’s a result of aging, smoking, or wearing dark polish on repeat. It’s like a color corrector for your nails, with a soft lavender tint that evens things out, and a breathable formula that allows oxygen to flow to your nail beds. “It smooths texture, neutralizes discoloration, and strengthens nails,” says Dr. Collins.

Why we love it: Most nail polishes used to chip or fade faster than you could say, “I just gave myself a mani.” But the nail game changed with the Butter London Patent Shine 10X line. These polishes give you rich, luxe color and salon-level performance without the hassle. A 10-free formula and the brand’s signature polymer keep your mani chip-resistant, long-lasting, and crazy shiny. “For mature nails prone to breakage, it even strengthens your nails with bamboo extract, helps prevent breakage, and keeps them looking healthy while delivering that glossy, long-wearing finish,” says Dr. Collins. And with 61 shades, there’s a color match for everyone.

If your nails have natural ridges—normal as we age—thin layers will help avoid streaks and smooth things out for a polished look.

    Glass Nail File

    $15

    Amazon

Why we love it: “Filing your nails back and forth like you’re sawing wood is a fast track to splitting and breakage,” says Miss Pop. “Instead, file in one direction at a time for a smoother, healthier finish. And make sure your nail file has a grit higher than 200.” For context, nail file grit measures how coarse or fine the surface is—the higher the number, the finer the grit. “Anything below 180 grit is meant for acrylic or fake nails and is way too harsh for natural nails,” she adds. Her go-to: The Dr. Dana Glass Nail File, which creates a smooth, clean edge that helps prevent splits, peeling, and breakage—perfect for anyone with nails prone to damage.

    Editor's tip

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

Always file your nails dry. “Filing wet or damp nails can lead to splitting, peeling, and uneven edges because they become softer and more flexible when wet,” says Miss Pop.

Why we love it: Weleda Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream isn’t specifically designed for hands, but it might just be one of the best treatments for dry, aging hands and brittle nails. “This is a super-thick and rich hand cream with a plant-blend formula,” says Kandalec. “I love how it leaves the skin moisturized and dewy. I use it on set when I want the hands to be more luminous on camera.” Packed with sweet almond oil, sunflower seed oil, and beeswax, it has lasting hydration and softens rough cuticles. “It’s so effective yet gentle, and I love that I can also use it on my face,” she adds. If you prefer something lighter than a rich cream, Kandalec also recommends Weleda Skin Food Light Nourishing Cream for a more breathable, fast-absorbing option.

    Editor's tip

Beeswax is packed with vitamin A, which supports skin cell turnover and helps improve the texture of your cuticles and hands over time. Pro tip: Keep this tube by the sink as a reminder to moisturize after every wash.

    Sally Beauty

Why we love it: Mature nails, take a break from the gels. Kiss Gel Fantasy Press-On Nails are a stylish, low-maintenance way to protect and support nail growth while enhancing the look of healthy nails. “As time goes by, nails can get dry and brittle,” says Kandalec, who’s also a Kiss Nails brand ambassador. “Using press-ons is the perfect way to both protect your natural nails from breaking, and give you a stronger covering for daily tasks—and a beautiful, finished look, too.” These press-ons resemble a professional gel manicure, but are gentler on aging nail beds. “They even help improve splitting nails over time as your natural nails grow out underneath,” she adds.

    Editor’s tip

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

New to press-ons? “Be sure to remove press-ons properly with remover, not by prying them off,” says Kandalec. That can damage the nail plate, especially if your nails are already dry or brittle.

This three-in-one product doesn’t just remove polish—it also hydrates and conditions your nails and skin while it works. “It evens out texture, neutralizes discoloration, and strengthens nails with a breathable formula,” says Dr. Collins.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do you take care of your nails as you age?

As nails age, they can become more brittle, dry, and prone to splitting, making care and maintenance even more important. "Aging nails require hydration, strengthening, and protection," says Kristina Collins, MD, a double board-certified dermatologist based in Austin. Start by regularly applying cuticle oils and moisturizing hand cream to hydrate your nails and the surrounding skin. Incorporating a nail strengthener into your routine once a week is also crucial for addressing brittleness and promoting resilience. "Weekly use of a nail strengthener can make a big difference in reducing breakage," she says. Also, don’t forget to protect your nails from your lifestyle habits—pop on some gloves when washing the dishes to prevent hands and nails from drying out. "Wearing gloves prevents exposure to harsh chemicals," Dr. Collins confirms. By adopting these simple but effective habits, you can keep your nails strong, hydrated, and looking their best.

How do you get rid of buildup under your nails?

To safely remove buildup under your nails, soak your hands or feet in warm, soapy water for a few minutes to soften the debris. This makes it easier to clean them without irritating the skin around your nails. "Use a soft nail brush and avoid metal tools to reduce the risk of injury or infection," says Dr. Collins. Gently scrub under your nails with the brush, using light, circular motions to remove dirt and residue.

For our list of best nail care for mature nails, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from board-certified dermatologists. Big day for Meryl Streep fans (also known as literally everyone on Earth). Not only did Only Murders in the Building announce its season five premiere date (September 9, if, like me, you were wondering), but the award-amassing actor has finally been spotted filming scenes from The Devil Wears Prada 2 in New York City. And yes, the infamously inhospitable editorial boss lady, Miranda Priestly, is sticking to her signature style after nearly 20 years—including that iconic hairstyle.

After years of mental fan fiction and rumors of a sequel, lovers of the 2006 fashion-focused film recently rejoiced at the official announcement of The Devil Wears Prada's next chapter. And with each sneak peek at Anne Hathaway's Andy Sachs looks—whether spotted by paparazzi or shared by Hathaway herself on social media—the anticipation is building. But I have to admit, as much as I've been looking forward to the inevitable influx of aspirational style inspo, I've been most excited to see Streep step back into the role of Miranda Priestly, and new photos snapped on the sidewalk do not disappoint.

Streep was spotted in NYC on Wednesday, July 23, decked out as Miranda, looking—and you're not going to believe this—extremely chic. A vibrant purple blouse was tucked into a leather Gabriela Hearst pencil skirt that matched her platform pumps, her peachy trench coat flowing with her confident gait. And there, topping it all off, was the hair.

Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly filming Devil Wears Prada 2Photo: Getty Images

Miranda Priestly is still sporting an extremely elegant bixie—that sweet spot between a bob and a pixie that can truly be customized to anyone's personal style. In this case, it's sleek yet soft, with a side part and voluminously swooping bangs that hit right at the top of her sunglasses.

Did anyone think this legendary character would come back with a waist-length low ponytail or massive curls? Of course not. But that doesn't dampen the excitement of the big, if not predictable, reveal. And there's something oddly comforting about seeing Streep in the short crop so closely associated with the queen of making people uncomfortable.

Treating acne (and the discoloration it leaves behind) is no easy task, but the best azelaic acid serums can speed up the process. If you're a skin-care enthusiast, you've likely heard of—and experimented with—a handful of acids, be it glycolic, salicylic, or polyhydroxy. However, azelaic acid is particularly effective at killing acne-causing bacteria, loosening skin to unclog pores, reducing inflammation, and evening skin tone (all without irritating sensitive skin types). "[Azelaic acid serum] is a great product to use in combination with other acne medicines or alone,” says Ava Shamban, MD, a Beverly Hills-based board-certified dermatologist. If your skin-care concerns involve pesky pimples, dark spots, and redness, we've rounded up the best azelaic acid-infused serums to add to your routine, stat.

Why it’s worth it: When an azelaic acid product is called Even Tone, you expect results—and this delivers. Developed by dermatologists, Fig.1’s Even Tone Serum is packed with heavy-hitting brighteners like “niacinamide, tranexamic acid, alpha-arbutin, and 1% azelaic acid to help fade dark spots and boost glow. This combination helps improve skin concerns like discoloration and radiance,” says Dr. Garshick. Plus, it’s fragrance-free and gentle enough for all skin types, including sensitive skin, thanks to a much lower concentration of azelaic acid than other products on the shelf. The lightweight texture absorbs quickly, plays nicely with your SPF or makeup, and comes in a sleek, refillable bottle.

Why it’s worth it: Naturium’s Azelaic Topical Acid 10% is a gentle, multitasking treatment that’s perfect for sensitive or acne-prone skin. It features potassium azeloyl diglycinate, a milder derivative of azelaic acid, along with niacinamide and ethyl ascorbic acid (a stable form of vitamin C) to calm redness, fade post-acne spots, and brighten skin without irritation. “I’m a busy, working mom, so I love products that help me multitask. This is such a great combination for those with acne-prone skin who manage redness and want to incorporate anti-aging ingredients,” says Dr. Saedi, who recommends using a pea-sized amount in the morning. “In a couple of months, you should notice an improvement in texture, lighter brown spots, and clearer, more radiant skin.”

    Agency by Curology

    Future Formula

    $40

    Agency by Curology

Why it's worth it: If the lower doses of azelaic acid available over the counter aren’t doing your skin justice (and if you have approval from a trustworthy dermatologist), it’s time to look into a prescription-strength formula. Our editors love the Best of Beauty-winning Agency by Curology Future Formula, a customized night cream available via telehealth prescription. Since it’s personalized for your skin, your exact formula will vary, the brand states that most formulas contain tretinoin (a prescription-level retinoid that addresses fine lines) paired with azelaic acid and other skin-brightening ingredients like tranexamic acid and niacinamide.

"This made me so at ease with my skin journey. Every night—after cleansing and spritzing on my favorite essence—I spread one pump of the creamy, buttery-yellow Future Formula all over my face. Straight away, you can tell the serum is not going to suck the moisture out of your skin because its rich texture spreads on a layer of hydration without feeling like you're undergoing a painful chemical peel. Plus, I love that it doesn't have the overwhelming, chemical smell that retinol tends to have. I simply layer a moisturizer on top and I'm free to get my beauty sleep. It puts everything my skin needs—over-the-counter and prescription ingredients—in one simple bottle." —Devon Abelman, former beauty editor

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is azelaic acid?

When most people hear the word "acid," they usually think of a harsh chemical, but actually, azelaic acid is a sensitive skin-friendly molecule (well, depending on its concentration, which we’ll dive more into) found and derived from barley, rye grains, and wheat. It's part of the dicarboxylic acids family and has antibacterial, keratolytic, comedolytic, and antioxidant properties. Azadeh Shirazi, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in La Jolla, California, tells Allure that azelaic acid works by inhibiting tyrosinase (a.k.a. the enzyme involved in pigment production) and, thereby, "reduces hyperpigmentation" and describes this buzzy acid as a "dermatologist favorite, ack-of-all-trades, and one of the most underrated skin-care ingredients." Okay, we’re officially sold.

Dr. Green echoes Dr. Shirazi's sentiments. Both professionals also note that the benefits of azelaic acid include antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, excellent for treating skin conditions like acne and rosacea, as it kills breakout-causing bacteria and reduces inflammation. This versatile acid, also considered a gentle exfoliant, stimulates cell turnover as well. As such, Dr. Green says that azelaic acid "can help reduce the appearance of acne scars."

    Who can use azelaic acid?

The good news is that azelaic acid is safe for all skin types, but with that being said, Dr. Green advises those with sensitive skin to start using the ingredient "once a day, increasing the frequency to twice a day after several weeks." And, if you experience any irritation, it's best to consult your doctor before continuing.

You also need not worry too much about adjusting your entire skin-care routine to incorporate azelaic acid. Fortunately, Dr. Green and Dr. Shirazi agree that azelaic acid is generally gentle enough and safe to use with other ingredients like vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs, and retinoids. However, says Dr. Green, "If you have prescription-strength azelaic acid, Retin-A, or other topical creams, you should consult a dermatologist."

Depending on your skin type and concerns, azelaic acid can be found in over-the-counter products in all sorts of strengths, from as low as 1% to as high as 15%, with the highest prescription-strength concentration coming in at 20%, per Dr. Shirazi. However, lower concentrations can be just as effective and “may help prevent skin irritation" for those with reactive, sensitive skin, says Dr. Green. "Skin-care products with a low concentration of azelaic acid can be beneficial when it comes to unclogging pores, preventing acne breakouts, and soothing skin inflammation," he adds. For those with acne-prone skin, lower concentrations of azelaic acid are often combined with other actives like AHAs and BHAs for a multi-pronged approach.

    Meet the experts

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that’s included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best azelaic acid products, we considered each product’s performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from board-certified dermatologists.

Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.
